Después de aprender As…as, en está lección aprenderemos There is / There are.

There is – There are

Usamos there is y there are para decir que algo existe.

Positive Sentences: Usamos there is para singular y there are para plural.

  • There is one table in the classroom. (Hay una mesa en el salón)
  • There are 3 chairs in the classroom. (Hay 3 sillas en el salón)
  • There is a spider in the bath. (Hay una araña en la bañera)
  • There are many people at the bus stop. (Hay mucha gente en la parada del bus)

También utilizamos there is con innumerables sustantivos:

  • There is milk in the fridge.
  • There is some sugar on the table.
  • There is ice cream on your shirt.

Contractions

La contracción de there is es there’s.

  • There’s a good song on the radio.
  • There’s only one chocolate left in the box.

No se puede contratar there are.

  • There are nine cats on the roof.
  • There are only five weeks until my birthday.

Forma negativa

Lo negativo se forma poniendo «not» después is o are:

  • There is not a horse in the field.
  • There are not eight children in the school.
  • There is not a tree in the garden.
  • There are not two elephants in the zoo.

Casi siempre usamos contracciones cuando hablamos. Las contracciones negativas son:

  • There’s not = There isn’t
  • There are not = There aren’t

There aren’t con ANY

Cuando queremos indicar que existe una cantidad cero de algo que usamos, there aren’t any.

  • There aren’t any people at the party.
  • There aren’t any trees in my street.

También usamos esta estructura con innumerables sustantivos:

  • There isn’t any water in the swimming pool.
  • There isn’t any sugar in my coffee.

Questions (Preguntas)

Para formular una pregunta que colocamos is / are delante de there. Nuevamente usamos cualquiera con preguntas plurales o aquellas que usan sustantivos incontables. También usamos there is / there are en respuestas cortas.

  • Is there a dog in the supermarket? – No, there isn’t.
  • Are there any dogs in the park? – Yes, there are.
  • Is there a security guard in the shop? – Yes, there is.
  • Are there any polar bears in Antarctica? – No, there aren’t.
  • Is there any ice-cream in the freezer? – Yes, there is.

How Many with Are There

ISi queremos averiguar la cantidad de objetos que existen, usamos How many en la siguiente forma:

How many + plural noun + are there (+ complement).

  • How many dogs are there in the park?
  • How many students are there in your class?
  • How many countries are there in South America?
  • How many Star Wars films are there?
