Después de aprender Wh Questions, en esta lección aprenderemos Short & Long Answers.
En inglés americano, no es necesario que las respuestas estén en oraciones completas. Sería poco natural y repetitivo que la respuesta sea la misma que la pregunta. En el mundo real, usamos respuestas cortas (Short Answers). (Nota: podemos usar Sí / No como respuesta, pero es más cortés usar respuestas cortas).
Short Answer Structure (Estructura)
Positive: Yes + subject pronoun + auxiliary verb
Negative: No + subject pronoun + auxiliary verb + NOT
Examples (Ejemplos)
Was Chris at the party last night?
- Yes, he was. (short positive answer)
- Yes, Chris was at the party last night. (long positive answer)
- No, he wasn’t. (short negative answer)
- No, Chris was not at the party last night. (long negative answer)
Did you see Julie on the weekend?
- No, I didn’t. (short negative answer)
- No, I didn’t see Julie on the weekend. (long negative answer)
- Yes, I did. (short positive answer)
- Yes, I did see Julie on the weekend. (long positive answer)
Could they speak Portuguese?
- Yes, they could. (short positive answer)
- Yes, they could speak Japanese. (long positive answer)
- No, they couldn’t.
- No, they couldn’t speak Portuguese. (long negative answer)
Short Answers with DID
Recuerda que si la pregunta comienza con DID, puede dar una respuesta corta usando DID. No es necesario usar el verbo principal en la respuesta.

Did the airplane arrive on time?
