Past Continuous

Después de aprender el Simple Future, en esta lección aprenderemos Past Continuous

El Pasado Continuo (Past Continuous) es un tiempo importante en inglés. Lo usamos para decir lo que estábamos haciendo en un momento particular en el pasado.

¿Cómo hacemos que el pasado sea continuo?

La estructura del tiempo pasado continuo es:

subject + auxiliary be + main verb
    conjugated in Past Simple
was, were present participle

El verbo auxiliar (be) se conjuga en el pasado simple: was, were

El verbo principal es invariable en presente participio: -ing

Examples

  • I was…working
  • You were…watching T.V.
  • He was…studying
  • She was…cooking
  • It was…open
  • We were…jogging
  • You were…not listening to me
  • They were…not here at that moment

Para las oraciones negativas, insertamos «not» entre el verbo auxiliar y el verbo principal.

Para las oraciones de preguntas, intercambiamos el sujeto y el verbo auxiliar.

Mire estos ejemplos de oraciones con el pasado continuo:

subject auxiliary verb   main verb
+ I was   watching TV.
+ You were   working hard.
He, she, it was not helping Mary.
We were not joking.
? Were you   being silly?
? Were they   playing football?

Cuando usamos el Pasado Continuo (Past Continuous), nuestro oyente generalmente sabe o entiende a qué hora estamos hablando. Mira estos ejemplos:

  • I was working at 10pm last night.
  • They were not playing football at 9am this morning.
  • What were you doing at 10pm last night?
  • What were you doing when he arrived?
  • She was cooking when I telephoned her.
  • We were having dinner when it started to rain.
  • Ram went home early because it was snowing.
  • He was always leaving the tap running.
  • She was constantly singing.
  • I was working in the garden all day.
  • He was reading all evening.
  • The sun was shining every day that summer

En la próxima lección aprenderemos Adverbs of Frequency.
