As…as

Después de aprender Plural, en esta lección aprenderemos As…as.

Comparativo es el nombre de la gramática utilizada al comparar dos cosas. Las dos formas básicas de comparar son usar as…as o than. A continuación se muestran ejemplos de cada uno:

  • She’s twice as old as her sister. (Ella es dos veces mayor que su hermana.)
  • He’s not as stupid as he looks! (¡No es tan estúpido como parece!)
  • I’m almost as good in math as in science. (Soy casi tan bueno en matemáticas como en ciencia.)
  • This book is not as exciting as the last one. (Este libro no es tan emocionante como el último.)
  • The cafeteria is not as crowded as usual. (La cafetería no está tan llena como siempre.)
  • Russian is not quite as difficult as Chinese. (El ruso no es tan difícil como el chino.)
  • This computer is as good as that one. (Esta computadora tan buena como esa.)
  • She’s as strong at chess as I am. (Ella es tan buena en el ajedrez como yo.)
  • Today it’s as cold as it was yesterday. (Hoy hace tanto más frío como ayer.)
  • Our car is as big as your car. (Nuestro auto es tan grande como tu auto.)
  • This grammar topic is as easy as others. (Este tema gramatical es tan fácil como los demás.)
  • I find science as difficult as mathematics. (Encuentro la ciencia tan difícil como matemáticas.)
  • Today’s ESL lesson was as interesting as usual. (La lección de ESL de hoy fue tan interesante como siempre.)

Structure: Subject 1 + To Be (not) + as + Adjective + as + Subject

Positivo: el sujeto 1 y el sujeto 2 son iguales

  • Today is as windy as yesterday.
  • Grapefruit juice is as delicious as orange juice.
  • Instagram is as popular as Facebook.

Negative: el sujeto 1 no es igual al sujeto 2. Debemos poner el tema que es menos, primero.

  • English is not as difficult as Spanish. (means that Spanish is more difficult)
  • He is not as dumb as he looks. (means he looks dumb, but he is intelligent)
  • Selma Hayek is not as beautiful as Penelope Cruz. (means Penelope Cruz is more beautiful than Selma Hayek)

Questions Structure: Verbo Ser + Sujeto 1 + como + Adjetivo + como + Sujeto 2

  • Is your brother as tall as your father?
  • Are you as hard-working as your friends?
  • Is your hair as long as your sister’s? Am I as short as you?
