Las conjunciones correlativas vienen en pares, y debes usar ambas en diferentes lugares en una oración para conectar las ideas de forma correcta. Obtienen su nombre del hecho de que trabajan juntos (co-) y relacionan un elemento de oración con otro.
Here are some common examples:
- As…as
- Either…or
- Neither…nor
- Both…and
- Whether…or
- Not only…but also
Los usamos siempre juntos para comparar dos elementos del mismo tipo (dos adjetivos, dos sustantivos, dos cláusulas similares, dos verbos o acciones en el mismo tiempo).
Examples:
- Playing cards is not as funny as bowling.
- I will study either Chemistry or Biology.
- We’ve seen neither Paul nor Susan lately.
- Give me both the cheeseburger and the French fries.
- I don’t know whether we should watch Avengers or Mad Max.
- Gandhi was not only intelligent, but also kind.
Wrong Examples:
- Brad Pitt is not only an actor, but also rich. ( ‘actor’ is a noun, while ‘rich’ is an adjective).
- I want both winning a Nobel prize and a Ferrari. (well, these are obviously not related. Plus, one contains a verb and the other doesn’t.
- She suggested me whether running or to jog in the mornings (Either we use gearing or we use infinitive, but not both ).
More Examples:
- The war caused not only destruction and death but also generations of hatred between the two communities.
- The car not only is economical but also feels good to drive.
- This investigation is not only one that is continuing and worldwide but also one that we expect to continue for quite some time.
- I identified with Denzel Washington not only as an actor but as a person.
- Not only was it raining all day at the wedding but also the band was late.
- Not only will they paint the outside of the house but also the inside.
- Not only did she forget my birthday, but she also didn’t even apologise for forgetting it.
